Using a mic on another instrument

I want to use my Fiddle Mic on my banjo. Will it work? Or I want to use my Mandolin Mic on my bass. Will it work?

Each of our mics is tuned for a specific instrument to create a natural sound with that instrument. If you use a mic on another instrument that the mic is not intended for, you will need to apply some equalization (EQ or tone control) to make the instrument sound natural.

Attach your mic to another instrument as shown in each mic's quickstart guide. You might need to use drafting tape to attach the mic. Then in your mixer or amp, adjust the bass, midrange and treble until the sound is the way you want it. If your mixer allows, switch in a 100 Hz highpass filter except for the bass and cello.

In a mixer, you want that EQ to be applied to the monitor speakers as well as the house speakers. To do that, set the MONITOR SEND (AUX SEND) control for the mic channel to POST FADER. That way, the EQ applied to the mic will appear both in the house and in the monitors.

If you can adjust EQ or tone on stage, such as with a preamp or instrument amp, do that instead.
